Lazy Sunday Backing TUTORIAL

There are lots of Lazy Sundays popping up with the a QAL going on. A couple folks have asked about my pieced backs. I always do a similar pieced back for each Lazy Sunday that I make. Here are a few…the Acacia.

And the original Scrumptious/Marmalade!

DSC_0292I always try to place my fabric the most economical way. For the Lazy Sunday, I like to buy 1 7/8 yard of one fabric and 1/2 yard of an accent fabric. The accent fabric cannot be directional; I tend to choose a blender type fabric. How cute is the selvage on these Valentine prints?!

20140220-072310.jpgFirst, you will unfold the larger piece and fold it end to end lining up one selvage. Fold it in half lengthwise twice.

20140220-072339.jpgThen you will cut off the selvage. I save my selvages so I tend to cut off about 1 1/2″. It is important that you cut a straight line and that it runs perfectly parallel to the selvage.

20140220-072356.jpgSet that piece aside. Now take your accent piece and fold it foldline to selvage.

20140220-072419.jpgCut off the selvage. I cut just above the fold. DO NOT cut the fold.

20140220-072436.jpgNow cut the accent piece into two pieces that are 8 1/2″ wide. They measure approximately 8 1/2″ x 40″.

20140220-072456.jpgPiece these end to end right sides together.

20140220-072518.jpgSew a 1/4″ seam.

20140220-072552.jpgYou will now have a piece that is approximately 8 1/2″ x 80″.

20140220-072614.jpgNow place this right sides together along the clean edge that you cut on your main fabric. Sew a 1/4″ seam along the edge.

20140220-072637.jpgSquare up the back. And you’ll have this!

20140220-072655.jpgThis makes a great back design for lots of throws! Since throws are usually barely wider than the fabric, it’s nice to just add an accent strip and have a fun back.

Now I need to go quilt my Valentine Lazy Sunday! I’m either a little late or WAY early:)

  1. Nice tutorial, I am a big fan of a pieced back. I like those legs on your Acacia Lazy Sunday. The person they are attached to must be very attractive. xoxo
