Timna Tarr is Coming to NC

Do you follow Timna Tarr? She is the maker of many award winning quilts, including one of my favorites, the egg quilt!

I met Timna at my first market and have enjoyed ogling her stunning quilts ever since. Her sense of color is spot on! This is one of her map quilts in progress.

And she’s coming to North Carolina to teach her map quilt workshop and do a lecture/trunk show with the Triad MQG.

Tuesday, July 25, 6:30: Lecture/Trunk Show $5 fee at the door

Wednesday, July 26, 10-4: Map Workshop $75 for TMQG members & $85 for nonmembers

Both events will be at South Fork Community Center on Country Club. We meet in the main large building in the back behind Cricket’s Nest.

For the workshop, Timna will start out by showing her techniques. Then we will all start our maps. Each person gets to choose their own location! I’m considering doing the neighborhood I grew up in! Corey & Her Quilts are Coming to NC

Who’s a fan of Corey Yoder?! She’s the awesome designer behind quite a few stunning Moda collections, including her latest, Lulu Lane. Corey is also a pattern designer under the clever name Coriander Quilts and author of Playful Petals.

And let’s get real for a second, she’s one of my favorite people in the quilting world. She’s quick witted with a kind, generous personality. It’s hard to find a more genuinely wonderful person. We taught together at Stitchfest last year and instantly became buds. You will love her!

Now that I’ve talked her up, you can meet her in person if you’re local. She’s coming to Triad MQG on Tuesday, March 28 for a trunk show. We meet at Southfork Community Center on Country Club at 6:30 pm on the fourth Tuesday of the month. There is a $5 fee at the door for out of town speakers. We are also offering a workshop!! The workshop will be Wednesday, March 29 from 10-4, also at Southfork. The workshop is $75 for TMQG members and $85 for non-members. The workshop fee includes a copy of her book, Playful Petals. We will be making the gorgeous Petal Pillow on the cover of her book! And we will be getting a hand quilting lesson in the afternoon. Corey is a master hand quilter! I’m already picking my fabrics for the pillow!

Want to make an Austin House in NC?

Big news! Carolyn Friedlander is coming to North Carolina! She will be visiting with the Triad MQG and Sewingly Yours. First up will be Carolyn showing off her magic with a trunk show. She will lecture during our normal Triad MQG meeting. 


It will be September 27 at 6:30 at South Fork community center on Country Club in Winston Salem. We always meet the fourth Tuesday of the month at 6:30. It will be $5 at the door for both members and non-members. There is no need to reserve your spot.

Carolyn will be teaching two classes at Sewingly Yours. On Wednesday, September 28, she will be teaching her Austin House class. 


This is a really cool  foundation piecing pattern. She’ll also be doing lots of chatting about color placement. 

Her next class is a needle turn appliqué class on Thursday, September 29. She’ll be teaching the Hesperides pattern. You’ll learn her needle turn technique as you make this modern pillow.

The classes are $80 for members and $90 for nonmembers. If you sign up for both, it’s $150 for members and $170 for nonmembers. They will also provide a yummy lunch. You can call the shop directly to register at 336.766.8271. There are a limited number of spots left. It should be another successful Triad MQG/Sewingly Yours event! I cannot wait!!

Modern Applique Coming to NC

I met Shannon Brinkley at Quilt Market a few markets ago and she was there promoting her book Scrappy Bits Appliqué. I thought it was a cool technique and we invited her to come visit the Triad MQG. I’m always excited when someone awesome is coming to North Carolina to teach quilty things! She will be doing a lecture/trunk show on March 22 at 6:30. We meet at South Fork Community Center on Country Club. Because she’s coming from out of town, there is a $5 charge.

Back to School

Guess who is coming to Winston Salem?! Shea Henderson! Shea is the uber talented gal behind Empty Bobbin Sewing Studio patterns and the author of School of Sewing. Shea is one of my favorite people in the quilty world! You will love her creative energy and positive outlook!

 She’ll be doing a book signing on Tuesday, September 22 at Village Fabric Shop from 3-5. Then she’s speaking at the Triad MQG at 6:30. We meet at the South Fork Community Center on Country Club. Visitors are welcome! There is a $5 fee. Then Shea is teaching two classes on Wednesday, September 23 at Village Fabric. One class is about quilt finishing and one is all about zippers. Don’t Call Her Betsy

Guess who is coming to Winston-Salem?! Elizabeth Dackson of Don’t Call Me Betsy! And I am really excited about it!! She will speaking with the Triad MQG on August 25. (We meet at Southfork Community Center on Country Club at 6:30 pm on the fourth Tuesday of the month.) Her lecture and trunk show will be super informative! The fee is $5. She will also be doing a free motion class at Sewingly Yours on Wednesday, August 26 from 9:30-3:30. The class is $90 ($80 for guild members).

Basic knowledge of free motion quilting on your machine (but no major skill!) is needed for the Sewingly Yours workshop.Elizabeth will be sharing loads of tips and tricks for free motion quilting on a domestic machine.

All the Way from Melbourne

Guess who is coming to North Carolina!? Jen Kingwell! I still can’t believe it. Jen is absolutely one of my favorite quilters!! Her work is beautiful and unique. She thinks of color and shape in such interesting ways. Her quilts are total eye candy! If you don’t already follow her work, you should check her out here.

She’ll be starting out with a book signing on Tuesday, May 26 at Sew Original Winston Salem from 2-4. UPDATE: The book signing is actually 3:30-5! They’ll have Gardenvale from Moda on hand. This is also a great time to meet and greet!

She’ll be doing a trunk show at the Triad MQG meeting that evening. We meet at the Southfork Community Center at 6:30 PM. It’s $5:) There will be books available for purchase here too!

On Wednesday, May 27, she will be teaching at Sew Original Winston Salem. She will be teaching Georgetown on my Mind. I’ve had this pattern for ages. I just love it! It’s a full day workshop, with lunch included for $130. To register, call the shop at (336) 760-1121.

On Thursday, May 28, she will be teaching at Studio Stitch in Greensboro. Her workshop will focus on the Bring Me Flowers quilt. Lunch is also included. The workshop fee is $130 and you can call the shop at (336) 288-9200 to sign up. If you do both of these workshops, there is a discount of $20.

On Saturday, May 30, Jen will head to the mountains for more teaching. She’s doing a hand piecing, applique and quilting class at Stitch in Time in Franklin. The fee is $40 and you can register online.

Then she is heading to Sew Original Boone for a class on Tuesday, June 2. Call the shop for more information at (828) 264-1049. Then, sadly she heads back to Australia. I’m already looking forward to our visit; I’m sure it will be here quicker than expected. If you live locally (or within driving distance), you need to be at one of these events. Jen is genuinely one of the most amazing quilters you’ll ever meet! She’s creative, inspiring and kind… all things I love to be around!!

The Talented Mrs. Gray, Let’s Try Again

The Triad MQG is hosting Karen Gray on Tuesday! She was snowed out back in January. Karen is full of fabulous ideas and I’m certain that it will be a night to remember. Karen hosts Modern Fabric Group Therapy at The Little General and makes many awesome things. She made this adorable dog bed for Mr. Mack.

Imagine Quilts GIVEAWAY

A few weeks ago, the amazing and sweet Dana Bolyard of Old Red Barn Co. came to visit the Triad MQG and Sew Original. We celebrated her new book, Imagine Quilts! Can we just start with the cover?! I love that quilt! Perfect scrappiness.

We were able to do a workshop with her and make tons of blocks for charity! She’s very calm about sewing curves and offered some great tips. We combined all the blocks we made for nearly three quilt tops.

The book is wonderful! There are some great quilts in there. The whale is adorable!! It’s a favorite of mine as I love whales.
