Butter Churn Block TUTORIAL

Welcome to the Old School BOM 2021 August post!! I've designed a block inspired by a traditional churn dash with a modern twist. My favorite look...modernitional. For those of you who are new here, I'm Lee! I design patterns and teach while offering loads of tips and my happenings here on the blog. I'm also the author of a new book called Jump into Sewing! My business is named May Chappell for my great-grandmother; you can read all about why here.

Butter Churn requires just two fabrics! You'll want some contrast between the two. I went a smidge Old School with the vintage vibe Liberty fabric!

The pattern includes lots of half square triangles (HSTs). You'll make them all at the same time! Trimming HSTs makes for easy piecing and precision. My trimming tool of choice is the bloc loc! (affiliate link) It's fast and accurate, two of my favorite qualities.

The pattern includes pressing directions throughout. By pressing the HSTs to opposite sides, the points come out perfect every time!

It's magical! I love a crisp intersection, especially when I don't have to work for it.

The center block seams all lock together!

Here is a PDF of the Butter Churn Block. It is available free as of now; please download and enjoy! Tag #maychappell #osbom2021 and #butterchurnblock as you create! And get ready for Yvonne of Quilting Jet Girl in September.

Thank you to Kim Lapacek of Persimon Dreams who organized this block of the month, old school style. Each month on the 12th, there is a block featuring a new skill! The blocks all finish 12" and are perfect for a skill builder sampler to expand your stitching repertoire. Check out the schedule and learn more here.
